About the Course

Overview

Our Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Open Cohort Programme has been designed for organisations looking to build improvement capability but aren’t yet ready for a closed cohort programme due to constraints around release time, competing priorities, or budget.

This open cohort model provides a flexible and accessible alternative enabling individuals and smaller groups to begin building structured improvement capability without needing to coordinate a full internal rollout.

Delivered through a series of interactive online workshops, the programme introduces delegates to the core principles of Lean Six Sigma and the DMAIC improvement framework (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control). The focus is on practical application, equipping delegates with the tools to identify inefficiencies, reduce waste, and contribute to measurable improvements in their day-to-day roles.

Participants will develop skills in areas such as process mapping, root cause analysis, basic data analysis, and visual management, building confidence to support and contribute to improvement activity within their teams.

Course Content

Delivered through a series of interactive workshops, the programme introduces delegates to the core principles of Lean Six Sigma and the DMAIC improvement framework (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control).

The focus is on practical application, equipping delegates with tools and techniques they can use immediately within their roles.

Key areas covered include:

  • Introduction to Lean and Six Sigma principles

  • The DMAIC improvement methodology

  • Process mapping and understanding workflows

  • Root cause analysis (including tools such as Fishbone and 5 Whys)

  • Basic data analysis and interpretation

  • Identifying waste and variation

  • Visual management and standardisation

Who It’s For

This programme is suited to individuals who are looking to build a foundation in structured improvement, including:

  • Team members and operational staff

  • Supervisors and team leaders

  • Individuals involved in improvement or problem-solving activity

  • Quality, engineering, and support function roles

It is particularly relevant for organisations looking to introduce improvement thinking more widely, without committing to a full cohort rollout.

How It’s Delivered

The programme is delivered as part of an open cohort, bringing together delegates from different organisations, roles, and industries.

  • Delivered live online through interactive workshops, structured across four days (split into two two-day blocks).

  • Designed to minimise time away from day-to-day responsibilities

  • Facilitated by an experienced development coach

This format provides flexibility while still maintaining a consistent, high-quality learning experience.

Programme Outcomes

When applied effectively, Lean Six Sigma is one of the most proven and widely adopted improvement methodologies in the world. It is trusted by organisations across sectors to reduce waste, improve quality and build a lasting culture of CI.

Key Outcomes for Organisations:

Reduced Waste and Cost – Helps identify and eliminate non-value-adding activities to reduce operational waste, streamline processes, and improve profitability.

Empowered People – Build internal capability at every level, creating confident problem-solvers who can identify opportunities and drive change from within.

Enhanced Customer Satisfaction – Keeps the customer at the centre of every improvement decision, ensuring processes deliver what’s needed on time, every time.

Improved Quality and Consistency – Uses data to uncover the root causes of defects and variation, delivering more reliable outputs that consistently meet customer expectations.

Data-Driven Decision Making – Replaces opinion and gut instinct with evidence, reducing risk and increasing confidence behind every improvement decision.

A Culture of Continuous Improvement – Moves beyond one-off projects to an organisation-wide mindset where improvement is ongoing, embedded, and sustained

Key Outcomes for Delegates:

Our Lean Six Sigma programmes equip delegates with everything they need to drive real, measurable change in your organisation.

Key Outcomes for Delegates:

Structured Problem Solving – A clear understanding of the DMAIC framework and how to apply it step by step to real workplace challenges and improvement activities.

Clearer Problem Definition – Confidence using core Lean Six Sigma tools, supported by examples and exercises that reflect real operational situations.

Practical Tools and Techniques – The ability to define issues accurately, and focus effort on the areas that will deliver the most impact.

Data-Driven Decision Making – Improved use of data and evidence to understand performance, identify root causes and support better decisions.

Identification of Improvement Opportunities – Skills to recognise waste, variation and inefficiencies, and turn these into practical, sustainable improvement actions.

Confidence to Contribute or Lead Projects – A structured approach to supporting or leading improvement activity, with greater confidence in discussions and decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a methodology used to improve business processes, based on the combination of two management ideologies, Lean and Six Sigma.

    • Lean is a way of thinking that aims to reduce waste from any process to maximise customer satisfaction. This involves continuous improvement and incremental adjustments to achieve minimal waste and allow teams to work more efficiently.

    • Six Sigma is a collection of methodologies which improve the quality of business processes and reduce the number of errors and defects. Its aim is a level of quality that is nearly perfect, with less than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. This quality is achieved using DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control).
  • Are There Pre-Requisites For This Course?

To take our Yellow Belt course, learners will ideally have some understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles, but this is not essential. For example they may have completed a Lean Awareness course or a White Belt certification.

  • Why choose an open cohort programme?

An open cohort provides a practical starting point for organisations that want to begin building improvement capability but are not yet ready to commit to a dedicated in-house programme. It removes the need for large group coordination, while still delivering structured, high-quality learning.

  • Are there progression pathways following this programme?

Yes. The Yellow Belt provides a strong foundation for further progression to Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and then Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training.
